The War of the Roses, in the fifteenth century, was a battle in England over the throne.  The white rose was the symbol for York, and the red rose was the symbol for Lancaster. (The house of Lancaster won that war.)

Nowadays, red roses are very popular flowers for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day,

In French and Portugese, French, and Spanish, rose is the word for red.

Interesting sidenote: The phrase sub rosa, means secrecy. This phrase came from a practice in ancient Rome of leaving a rose outside a door during a private meeting. The rose indicated that those people in the room shouldn’t want to be disturbed.

So, treat yourself or a special loved one today with a single red rose, or a beautiful bouquet.
