Where should you hang your hat? Or rather, to wear or not to wear a hat?

Many women look elegant in hats, but many more of us don’t know how or when to wear them. Today I’m sharing a post by Susan Street, who writes a popular women’s blog.
Yes, a hat is a fashion statement. And yes, hats can keep you warm, or cool, and can protect your skin from the sun, thus avoiding skin cancer. A hat can make a fashion statement, keep you warm, keep you cool and help you avoid skin cancer.

Here are some basic rules for hat wearing:

1. Never wear a hat on the back of your head or you’ll look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Your hat should rest on your forehead so that you can look someone straight in the eye without tilting your head back.

2. A lady never removes her hat. (For one thing, no one wants to advertise her “hat head.” Only gentlemen should remove their hats indoors.

3. The brim of your hat should not be wider than your shoulders.

4. Do not wear a large hat to the theater or any other event where it might block someone’s view. (Common sense and a courtesy to others.)

5. If you face is round, the crown of your hat should be higher. A cloche style will make your face look round.

6. If you wear a hat in the evening it should have a veil.

7. A hat makes a statement on its own so large earrings, glasses and a necklace is too much going on at once. Keep the rest of your outfit simple.

Try on hats in front of a full-length mirror to make sure the shape complements your face shape and also that the fit and proportion is correct for your body. A hat should rest comfortably on your head, not on the tops of your ears.

Have fun with the color. Use an accent color or blend in the color with what you’re wearing.

Straw or other light weight material is perfect for summer. Wear felt or wool in the winter.

  1. Interesting advice!I don’t wear hats often. Caps look silly on me and I get negative comments from family when I wear hats. They make my head sweat and annoy me, anyway.
